My Kind of Spider Girl!
If you're really squeamish when it comes to spiders, you'll most likely want to skip reading this blog post (sorry, I'll catch you next time!). But I thought it'd be fun to share a little back story of what inspired me to create this lovely girl and her friends.
First of all, I've made a spun cotton spider or two previously (giving them pipe cleaner legs just adds such a fun vintage touch that I love!). I wanted to make a little more challenging piece, but wasn't sure which direction to go. Then it hit me, as a little girl (growing up in the south of the USA) I used to LOVE playing outside. Whether alone or with friends, I probably spent the majority of my time outdoors.
I fondly remember picking up a Grandaddy Longlegs spider and happily skipping around with it on my arm, like I'd made a new friend (sorry, mom!). I also absolutely loved roly-polies (fascinated by how they curl into balls) and crunching shells on trees left behind by cicadas.
Those memories, and just the thought of this being really fun to make, inspired me to create this little trio (yes, trio - the little 8 legged friend on the jack-o-lantern is my tiniest spun cotton spider yet..I think?).
Marvel can have their Spider-Girl, this is my kind!
