Halloween Spun Cotton Works In Progress
Since I share work-in-progress photos on my Instagram account, I thought it'd be fun to share them on my blog as well, for those who aren't on social media. These are a few of my latest posts, but ideally I'd love to write more blog posts in the future, sharing a piece from its beginning stages of fluffy cotton goodness to the last stage of tiny details!
I love when I get the bare bones down on a spun cotton make. The possibilities feel endless at this stage! I can build up as I go, adding more details, or just go straight to painting. That also has a magic all its own, and I LOVE that first swipe of colour on the white cotton surface.
I've mentioned before that my own childhood memories of trick-or-treating in the '70s and '80s are what inspired me to make my very first ghost girl (and other spun cotton trick-or-treaters) ..and that still holds true today! I've changed the design some for 2024, adding spun cotton buckets (instead of paper ones), treats and some new designs to their skirts and dresses. I call these my Ghost Girls 2.0.
Here they are mid paint:
For my witch girl sitting on a moon, I was inspired by that vintage photo (in the background below) of a girl from the '40s sitting on a big cardboard moon at a dance. In the end I ended up giving her a nice bit of sparkle (and a little friend joined her on the moon!).
The witch and ghost girls can be found (along with a lovely girl and her spider friends!) in my Halloween or New collections.
I hope you enjoyed seeing a little of what I share on my private Instagram account for my newsletter subscribers, @spuncottonjess . If you'd like to join us, just subscribe at the bottom of this page and send a follow request on Instagram so I can add you.
If you're not on Instagram, no worries! I'm planning to prioritise my blog as soon as I can. I enjoy longer forms of content, so this feels more at home to me than social media.
Love,
Jessica
Oh nice Lisa, I look forward to reading yours! I love blog posts, big or small. This suits me better than social media. :)
I’m rebooting my blog too! Love your little ghost and moon girls.
